SPORTS REHABILITATION SCIENCE AND ATHLETIC TRAINING
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It takes a specialist to rehabilitate an athlete, as their recovery requires returning to activity beyond the average activities of daily living.
Like in Physiotherapy, Sport’s Rehabilitation Science and Athletic Training use a range of treatment modalities such as manual therapy, therapeutic, sports related exercises, electro-physical modalities and advice, to allow the natural healing mechanisms of the body to take over for recovery.
This can involve multiple stages of muscle balancing, motor control training and nervous system programming through movement.
The final stage, if applicable, is determining when resuming participation of the respective sport or activity is appropriate. Particular emphasis is placed on setting performance specific goals as well as using valid and reliable outcome measures to monitor changes and progress.
Reflection, evaluation and constant adjustment of our effectiveness in the methods and approach utilized, is at the heart of working with high performance clients.
WHO IS IT FOR?
Although the term “Sports” or “Athletic” appears only inclusive to athletes or those who have undergone a traumatic, sports related event, this isn’t the case. Functional rehabilitation allows for the attention to overuse injuries of weekend warriors, muscular imbalances of desk jockeys, or the common “slept the wrong way” syndromes. In this sense, we are all athletes looking for optimal function in all of our activities of daily living.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Once an Initial Assessment has taken place, the therapist will go through the process of setting sports and performance goals, in agreement the client, any involved coaches, trainers, family members, as well as the main health care practitioner involved i.e. doctor, surgeon etc.
The rehabilitation plan will develop and progress according to the ongoing evaluation of observed changes in pain levels, mobility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, overall health and general performance regarding the sport/ activity undertaken.
These changes are measured objectively using specialized outcome measures and recorded systematically. This allows the client as well as their involved health care practitioners to monitor the development of their condition clearly. Sessions last 1 hr.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
